Hi
Can any one suggest a hand held or small portable GPR system to check the depths of bound layers in asphalt roads and possibly more i.e backfill depths material types?
Cheers

Hi Kapersjd,
Surveying roads is best done with equipment that can be used not in contact. Typically horn antennas are used for this
purpose and the guys leading this field, Roadscanners OY in Finland (http://www.roadscanners.com/index.html) use just that.
However, some other companies like Mala Geoscience for instance claim their "closely coupled" bowtie antennas are as good
or better than the horns. They have developed some sort of special suspension that keeps the antenna always at the same
height from the asphalt. I haven't seen it myself, but it sounds quite interesting.
For more "steady" surveys and "local' surveys of asphalt or concrete you have several options:
1. Akula 9500 + GCB-2000 - Geoscanners AB ( this is a MW system with a 2GHz antenna)
2. Structure scan mini - GSSI (this is an entire system with a handle, the predecessor is called "handy scan" for good reasons)
3. CX system - MalÄ Geoscience (this is MW system with 1.2, 1.6 or 2.3GHz antenna)
4. Conquest - Sensors and Software ( this seems to be a MW system with an antenna, but S&S is a rather bad website when it comes to specs)
IDS also has a 2GHz antenna, but I don't know much about it and have never seen it working so I won't say anything about it.
There are other manufacturers in the market, but the basic idea is the same.
Let us know if you have any other questions.
Regards,
